Background & Experience

Associate Professor Daryl Cheng is a medical executive leader and digital health consultant. He is a practicing consultant paediatrician and clinical informatician at The Royal Children’s Hospital Melbourne (RCH) and Head of Paediatrics, Cabrini Health. He holds clinical research and educational posts as Honorary Senior Clinical Research Fellow, Murdoch Children’s Research Institute (MCRI) and Honorary Principal Fellow at the Department of Paediatrics, University of Melbourne.

He is engaged in systems thinking, innovation and design work through appointments at the Melbourne Children’s Campus Centre for Health Analytics (CHA) and RCH Digital Innovation & EMR Team. He has a keen public health and policy interest as evidenced by previous roles with Safer Care Victoria, Surveillance of Adverse Events Following Vaccination in the Community (SAEFVIC) and Melbourne Vaccine Education Centre (MVEC).

A/Prof Cheng is an active in the digital, data, technology and innovation spaces. He is the Chief Medical Officer of Magentus, a global health technology company with a focus on practice management and health informatics. He is a sought-after medical advisor and consultant for healthcare and technology startups and private sector companies on strategic projects ranging from digital health, data analytics and strategy and transformation.

Outside of clinical medicine, A/Prof Cheng holds various committee and council roles at the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and is a committee member and advisor in a range of government and private sector agencies and working groups. He is a non-executive board director of Adventist Healthcare Limited (AHCL) and Tweddle Child and Family Health Service. 

A/Prof Cheng’s research and scholarly contributions

A/Prof Cheng has specific interests in acute care & high dependency inpatient paediatrics and travel & immunisation medicine. He consults privately at Cabrini Health and is a co-founder of Family & Immunisation Travel Specialists (FITS) Clinic.

He is also a founder of Unyoked Health, a health startup comprising a boutique paediatric clinic (Unyoked Health Clinic), health education platform (The Well Nest) and health consultancy. He is a passionate health communicator who speaks regularly at medical education events, TV media and social media channels and is a featured writer for various blogs and print media.  

A graduate of Monash University, his interests led him to pursue further training in public health at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. His paediatric training was completed in Melbourne, Australia and paediatric clinical fellowship at the Hospital for Sick Children (Sickkids) in Toronto, Canada. He has completed observerships and sabbaticals in Europe, Canada and the USA.

A/Prof Cheng is a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians (RACP) and Australasian Institute for Digital Health (AIDH), an associate fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Medical Administrators (RACMA) and a graduate of the Australian Institute of Company Directors (GAICD). He is also a Certified Health Informatician Australasia (CHIA).

Daryl enjoys travel, photography and is an active member and founder of various community and non-profit enterprise ventures such as Bubbles and Briefcases. He enjoys collecting bow ties.
